UNAM and SECIHTI Join Forces on Quantum Science
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is collaborating with the Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI) to strengthen quantum science and technology development across the country, according to IMER Noticias. The effort positions Mexico to compete globally as quantum computing advances worldwide.
Multi-Institution Approach
The initiative includes:
- Scholarships and joint research projects
- Integration of UNAM institutes and research centers with teams from Mexico's National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Cinvestav, and the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC)
The Mexican Academy of Sciences recognizes quantum science as a cross-cutting field with applications in cryptography, materials simulation, and telecommunications, requiring early coordination among academia, industry, and government.
Funding and Timeline
SECIHTI opened its 2026 National Convocation for Scientific and Humanistic Research with proposals due by November 28. The state administration has signaled special interest in applying science and technology to public projects, including development of the Olinia, Mexico's first entirely domestically produced electric vehicle, per IMER Noticias.
Researchers anticipate a second round of financing dedicated to laboratory infrastructure. The first international scholarship call for quantum science is scheduled for the second half of 2026, with formal integration of research teams to follow.
Structural Changes
The new SECIHTI cooperation replaces the previous framework of Conahcyt and Conacyt, operating through the National Postgraduate System.
