Four Major Universities Join Forces
Mexico's largest higher education and research institutions have formalized a groundbreaking partnership. UNAM, IPN, Cinvestav, and UAM signed a Letter of Intent establishing the University Alliance of Mexico City, aimed at strengthening academic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation.
According to La Jornada, the agreement was signed by UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí, UAM Rector Gustavo Pacheco, IPN Director General Arturo Reyes Sandoval, and Cinvestav Director Alberto Sánchez Hernández. UNAM's official portal frames the initiative as a cornerstone effort to position the capital as a major hub for knowledge generation. Together, the four institutions serve more than 467,000 students and employ more than 52,000 faculty members.
Scope and Reach
The alliance will promote:
- Joint research initiatives
- Shared use of laboratories, libraries, and facilities
- Student and faculty mobility across all four campuses
The combined academic offering exceeds 300 undergraduate programs and 390 graduate degrees, backed by annual federal funding totaling more than 81 billion pesos.
Next Steps
Upcoming months will focus on defining concrete collaboration projects and establishing mechanisms for resource sharing. While the Letter of Intent expresses institutional commitment, specific agreements to be signed later will determine the practical scope of the alliance for the academic community.
