Mexico is staking a claim in one of the world's most strategic industries: semiconductors. The country is rolling out a program centered on Kutsari, a publicly-owned design hub, paired with targets to increase domestic content in this sector vital to electronics and advanced manufacturing.

According to the federal government's Innovation Promoter (Impulsora de Innovación), Kutsari was established as a public entity to develop semiconductor design capabilities in Mexico, with a team of specialists working on applied research projects. The Cinvestav research institution has identified semiconductors and genetic editing as priority scientific challenges for Mexican research centers.

The strategy is part of a broader push to increase public funding for science, technology, and domestic prototype development. The aim is to strengthen sectors including semiconductors, biotechnology, clean energy, and advanced mobility. The goal is to gradually raise the percentage of domestic content in the semiconductor value chain, a component essential to automobiles, medical devices, and consumer electronics.

Success will hinge on three pillars: developing specialized talent, sustaining investment, and forging partnerships with universities and companies. Official reports in the coming months will track progress at Kutsari and Mexico's growing capabilities in this highly specialized industry.
