The Coahuila Puzzle
How does a party sweep an entire state while losing nearly everywhere else in the country? That was the question Sunday's Coahuila congressional election left hanging, as the PRI-UDC coalition took all 16 majority districts and Morena walked away with nothing, but also filed explosive allegations of voter coercion.
The Numbers Tell a Story
According to Infobea, the PRI-UDC garnered 55.03% of votes (684,211 ballots) and claimed all 16 majority seats. The PT-Morena coalition finished second with 26.20% support, yet won zero districts. The real shock: the PAN collapsed to 2.16%, dropping below the 3% threshold needed to retain state campaign financing and finishing in fifth place. An unexpected winner emerged in Nuevas Ideas, a local party that captured 5.89% and became the third-largest force.
The "QRgate" Accusation
The controversy centers on method, not just results. Morena's national leadership filed a complaint with electoral authorities, alleging a scheme they call "QRgate." Campaign operatives allegedly distributed QR codes to voters, who were instructed to photograph their marked ballots and scan the code to receive a minimum payment of 500 pesos. The PRI, basking in its victory, claimed a clean sweep of "16 out of 16" congressional seats.
Why This Matters Beyond Coahuila
For Mexico, this case transcends regional politics. It strikes at the heart of electoral integrity and the electoral authority's power to investigate coercion allegations during a period when one party holds national hegemony. The upcoming ruling from local electoral officials, and potentially the state tribunal, will determine whether "QRgate" remains an accusation or becomes a cautionary precedent. Authorities are expected to deliver their decision within weeks. That ruling will be the real test.
