The catrinas parade elegantly, the sugar skulls bear names of their own, and the altars fill with photos, candles and the favorite dishes of those who are no longer here.
Reviving this tradition reminds us of something essential: here death is not hidden, it is welcomed. A place is set at the table, we tell it how our year went, we invite it to stay a while. That is why our dead are more alive than ever.
Those who visit us are surprised, inspired, and take a piece of this celebration home. What few know is that, although here it may seem that everything lasts three days, this country never stops celebrating. We celebrate at every long meal, at every gathering, in every shared memory.
So today, let us celebrate death together. Let us open the door, light a candle and welcome it into our home.
From Mexico to the world.
