Mexico's Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) reported a net loss of 29,922 formal jobs in May 2026, marking a monthly decline of 0.1%, according to the agency's report released June 9 and picked up by El Financiero. By month's end, total insured positions climbed to 22,718,681, the fifth-highest level in history and the strongest figure ever recorded for May.

The downturn was concentrated in agriculture, reflecting seasonal patterns tied to planting, maintenance, and harvest cycles across different regions. The IMSS also attributed the result partly to the cancellation of a fraudulent employer registration that included workers without genuine employment relationships, a data cleanup that pruned the registry. The IMSS figures matter because they track affiliation with Mexico's social security system and coverage of benefits for families in health, workplace injury, disability, life insurance, and housing through Infonavit.

On a year-over-year basis, the data shows 346,637 new jobs created over the past twelve months, equivalent to 1.5% growth, according to Bloomberg Línea. From January through May, the cumulative gain stands at 201,605 positions, while the average base salary for contributions closed May around 670 pesos daily, an improvement from the prior year. Private analysts expect the 2026 World Cup could deliver a temporary boost to tourism, restaurants, hotels, and transportation services, with visible effects in June and July employment reports. The challenge, analysts say, is converting that seasonal activity into permanent jobs and sustaining private investment momentum in manufacturing, the backbone of Mexico's formal labor market.

The next employment report arrives in the first week of July, when the IMSS publishes June figures capturing activity tied to World Cup preparations and tourist flows to host cities.
