Festival MIX México Turns 30
Festival MIX México is celebrating three decades with a major edition running June 17 through July 1 at five venues across Mexico City. The festival announced a lineup featuring 11 feature films and 14 short films in official competition, plus additional programming in special sections, according to Infobae on June 7.
The festival specializes in LGBTQ+ cinema and gender diversity. It operates across Cineteca Nacional Xoco, Cineteca Nacional Chapultepec, Cinépolis Diana, Cine Tonalá, and Eucalipto 20. The opening film is "Mickey," a documentary directed by Dano García about transgender artist Mickey Cundapí, originally from Mazatlán, as reported by Milenio.
A Major Cultural Event
MIX México is Mexico's longest-running festival dedicated to LGBTQ+ cinema, making it a cornerstone of the national cultural calendar. The timing coincides with the end of Mexico City's spring film programming cycle and the arrival of award-season cinema, while also capturing audience attention during the World Cup 2026 buildup at major cultural venues.
The festival marks 30 years of LGBTQ+ film circulation in Mexico. What began in 1996 as a modest screening series has evolved into an internationally recognized festival.
International Lineup
The official selection includes productions from at least eight countries, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Greece, Argentina, the United States, and the Philippines. Featured titles include "Adiós amor," "Perro perro," "Sabath Queen," and "Warla."
The festival is organized into sections: Rosa Mexicano, showcasing Mexican LGBTQ+ cinema; Variopinto, emerging independent work; and Panorama, international titles outside competition.
Special Events and Tributes
The festival will present the MIX Mariposa Awards recognizing competitive programming, alongside a tribute to filmmaker Julián Hernández featuring a restoration of "Mil nubes de paz cercan el cielo, amor, jamás acabarás de ser amor."
The program also includes filmmaker conversations and industry panels focused on international distribution and streaming platforms.
What's Next
The detailed venue schedule will be released on the official website and at box offices in the days before June 17.
