Planned Maintenance Across Two States
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced scheduled maintenance operations throughout June 2026 that will result in temporary power suspensions in municipalities across Sonora and Hidalgo, according to reporting by El Informador on June 12. The public utility explained that the controlled outages are part of preventive work and modernization efforts on its electrical distribution network.
Why the Maintenance Matters
The operation combines equipment maintenance, substation upgrades, and load balancing across different zones of the national grid. The goal is to prevent transformer collapse during peak summer demand driven by extreme heat, according to the official statement. Crucially, CFE distinguishes these as planned operational pauses, not emergency failures. This advance notice allows households and businesses to prepare, safeguarding critical equipment, medical devices, cooling systems, and small business operations. The maintenance window coincides with the start of hurricane season and record-breaking electricity consumption expected throughout the summer months.
Affected Areas and Schedules
In Sonora, maintenance covers municipalities including Rayón and Opodepe, along with communities such as Merésichic, Santiago de Ures, and San Pedro de Ures, with power cuts scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 AM.
In Hidalgo, the Huautla zone and communities including La Puerta, Coamitla, Pahuatitla, Xochitl, Santo Domingo, and Barrio Hondo will experience maintenance from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, according to the schedule replicated by Infobae from the agency's official notice.
Steps to Prepare
The CFE recommends users unplug appliances and computers and back up digital information before the scheduled outage window. The utility also advises residents to check backup power systems and emergency batteries. CFE has activated phone support channels and a mobile app for reporting any issues during the maintenance period.
What's Next
The next maintenance calendar update arrives June 30, when CFE will reprogram July's schedule based on observed thermal stress on the grid and demand reports.
