Who Sets the Rules for AI at Mexico's Top University?
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has launched its Coordinating Council for Artificial Intelligence, a governing body tasked with monitoring AI advances and steering their use toward a core principle: innovation guided by humanistic values.
The goal is governance, not bans. According to Proceso, the council will direct these tools toward the public good, aligning innovation with science and education to tackle urgent national problems. The UNAM Foundation clarifies that key objectives include establishing guidelines for students, faculty, and researchers to use AI responsibly and transparently.
Filling a Regulatory Vacuum
The timing is strategic. Mexico lacks specific AI regulation, and national debate still grinds on over who should ultimately govern the technology. UNAM, a pioneer in AI research through its institutes and faculties, crafting its own internal governance sends a message: academia intends to shape the rules, not simply follow them.
From Principles to Practice
Now comes the hard part. The council must produce concrete guidelines for AI use in classrooms, research, and university services. Its work could become a reference point for other universities and inform national legislative discussions. If successful, UNAM will have centered humanistic values in a conversation typically dominated by technical and commercial interests.
