Three Electoral Reforms Published
President Claudia Sheinbaum published three electoral reforms in Mexico's Official Gazette (DOF) on June 3: one governing the election of federal judges, another protecting independent candidacies, and a third criminalizing foreign interference in Mexican elections.
Judicial Elections Postponed to 2028
The first reform adjusts nomination criteria, deadlines, and validation procedures for electing members of the Federal Judicial Power. It postpones the judicial election originally scheduled for 2027 to June 4, 2028, to avoid overlap with concurrent general elections.
Independent Candidates Get New Protections
The second reform strengthens independent candidacies through an INE commission that will review nomination requirements. The third makes foreign interference in Mexican elections a criminal offense.
Implementation Timeline
According to Cultura Colectiva, legal adviser Luisa María Alcalde detailed the three pillars during the morning press conference. Congressional debate had already concluded before the decree was published, per Canal del Congreso. The package incorporates elements from a February initiative, with final adjustments approved in May.
The new framework takes effect for the 2027 midterm elections regarding independent candidacies and foreign interference penalties, and for the rescheduled federal judicial election. The INE will issue guidelines for implementing each reform in the coming months.
