Mexico's next strategic resource may lie beneath active oil fields. Pemex announced studies to identify hydrocarbon blocks with lithium extraction potential, partnering with UNAM, the National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energy, and LitioMX, the state lithium operator.
The logic is compelling: Mexican lithium concentrates in deep brines, and oil infrastructure already has wells, pipelines, and geological expertise. According to Global Energy, collaborating institutions also include the Energy Ministry and the Mexican Petroleum Institute. The approach lets Pemex leverage its lithium expertise to stay relevant in the energy transition without abandoning its core business.
Infobea confirms the strategy anchors the energy sovereignty plan Sheinbaum unveiled May 31.
The challenge is both operational and geopolitical. Three factors define Mexico's lithium moment:
- The state nationalized the lithium sector in 2022, with LitioMX as sole operator
- Estimated reserves in Sonora (Bacanora) and elsewhere sit in shale and brines, not Chile-style pegmatites
- Global lithium demand will triple by 2030 driven by electric vehicle batteries
Mexico faces stiff competition. Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Peru are all jockeying for position in the lithium value chain. Mexico's advantage is its multi-institutional model, bringing Pemex, UNAM, INEEL, and LitioMX to the same table.
The next signal arrives with publication of pilot blocks, expected in the third quarter. If Pemex can move lithium from rhetoric to production, the administration closes the term with a fresh strategic asset.
