Strike Continues by Narrow Margin

Oaxaca's Section 22 of the SNTE-CNTE voted Saturday, June 13, to continue the national strike launched June 1, after a close statewide assembly vote favored keeping the work stoppage going. State teacher leadership reported that 6,337 educators backed continuing the walkout, while 6,162 voted to end it.

National Leadership Takes Stock

The assembly wrapped up early Saturday morning. According to La Jornada, general secretary Yenny Aracely Pérez Martínez reported the decision to the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) leadership, which debated the strike's direction at the federal level the same day. Teachers are demanding a complete overhaul of the 2013 education reform, adjustments to ISSSTE law, and wage increases beyond what the Education Ministry offered.

Broader Movement Context

Section 22 teachers have maintained a permanent encampment in Oaxaca's central plaza since May 25, according to Excélsior. Union members are also pushing to recognize seniority for substitute teachers, expand IMSS-Bienestar coverage for retirees, and review pension mechanisms under individual account systems.

Parallel mobilizations continue in other states, including Section 18 in Michoacán and Section 9 in Mexico City, with similar demands and blockades of administrative offices throughout the week.

What's Next

Federal officials say they remain open to dialogue and committed to a budgetary response by July. National leadership signaled it would ratify or suspend the strike based on reports from each state section and new proposals from the Education Ministry in the coming hours.
