NASA Reveals Artemis III Crew
On June 9, NASA announced the four astronauts who will fly Artemis III, a dress-rehearsal mission scheduled for late next year. The flight will test docking procedures in Earth orbit between NASA's Orion spacecraft and lunar modules built by SpaceX and Blue Origin, according to Ámbito.
The Mission Crew
The team consists of American astronauts Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, and Randy Bresnik, joined by Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency. This marks the first European participation in a crewed Artemis mission.
Rubio, a U.S. engineer and military officer of Salvadoran descent, will fly his second orbital mission after spending a record 371 days aboard the International Space Station.
Testing the Path to the Moon
Artemis III will validate the docking procedures between the Orion capsule and the private lunar modules, according to Univisión. This mission is technically pivotal, establishing the landing architecture that will support humanity's return to the Moon. The actual lunar landing remains scheduled for Artemis IV under current plans.
Relevance for Latin America
The announcement matters for Mexico's space community. The Mexican Space Agency has signed cooperation agreements with NASA and participates in university projects tied to the Artemis program.
The next milestone will be a ground test in the fourth quarter, before launch.
