Thirty years after its debut, the MIX Mexico Festival opens its anniversary edition on June 17 with 25 films in competition and five venues across Mexico City. The inauguration takes place at Cineteca Nacional Xoco, screening Mickey, a documentary by Dano García about Mis$ Mickey, a transgender artist from Sinaloa.
According to Infobae, the 30th edition runs from June 17 to July 1 across five locations: Cineteca Nacional Xoco, Cineteca Nacional Chapultepec, Cinépolis Diana, Cine Tonalá, and Eucalipto 20. The official selection brings together productions from Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Greece, Argentina, the United States, and the Philippines, marking the festival's most internationally diverse program to date. For Mexico City, this milestone confirms the capital's status as a major regional hub for LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse cinema, a conversation that has graduated from independent festivals and university film clubs to mainstream commercial circuits over three decades.
The official competition features 11 feature films and 14 shorts competing for the MIX Mariposa Prize, reports Milenio. The jury is headed by filmmaker Ulises Pérez Mancilla, actress Regina Pavón, and actor Cristian Mariani. Programming spans four sections:
- Rosa Mexicano, spotlighting LGBTQ+ Mexican cinema from the past year
- Variopinto, showcasing emerging and independent Mexican voices
- Panorama, dedicated to international competition titles
- Out-of-competition screening of experimental shorts, horror films, and a post-porn program
The edition also includes a retrospective of Mexican filmmaker Julián Hernández, panel discussions on audiovisual archives, and free HIV testing during the first week.
Winners will be announced at the festival's close on July 1. The 30th edition arrives during Mexico City's summer cultural calendar, coinciding with a World Cup summer when film programming intensifies simultaneously across Cineteca, Cinépolis, and independent venues.
