Bilateral Security Meeting Strengthens US-Mexico Coordination

Mexico and the United States held a bilateral security meeting in Mexico City on Friday, June 13. The gathering came one week after a telephone call between Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, solidifying operational dialogue between both governments.

The meeting brought together officials from Mexico's Security Cabinet and representatives from the U.S. Embassy, according to Excelsior. Discussions centered on border security, fentanyl trafficking, money laundering, and combating transnational criminal organizations. For Mexico, the dialogue helps coordinate operational responses to the security priorities Washington has emphasized during the first year of Donald Trump's second administration. The Foreign Ministry (SRE) described the Velasco-Rubio call as a cordial exchange focused on security, migration, and final-stage reviews of the trade agreement (T-MEC).

Key Topics and Agreements

The phone call between Velasco and Rubio took place on June 8 and lasted roughly thirty minutes, according to Politico.mx. The bilateral working group reviewed mechanisms for financial information sharing and coordination between Mexican Customs and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Discussions also addressed southbound weapons trafficking, a longstanding Mexican government demand, as well as joint operations between financial intelligence units. Infobae reported that the Foreign Ministry is also seeking an in-person meeting between both foreign ministers in coming weeks, amid scheduling logistics for the 2026 World Cup being held on Mexican soil.

Both delegations agreed to hold follow-up technical meetings in July to track implementation of the agreements.

What's Next

The next phase of dialogue points toward an in-person meeting between Velasco and Rubio. That encounter will set the operational framework for bilateral security cooperation through the second half of the year and the conclusion of the World Cup.
