Mexico's Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco held a roughly 30-minute call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced at her morning press conference on June 9. The conversation focused on three priorities: security cooperation, migration and fentanilo trafficking, and the USMCA review.
The call comes as the formal USMCA review process kicked off on May 27, led by Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard. It arrives amid U.S. pressure, with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative proposing a 10 percent additional tariff on Mexico and 13 other economies as part of an investigation into forced labor practices. Mexico's Economy Ministry estimates roughly 85 percent of Mexican exports to the United States would be exempt from the measure due to USMCA rules of origin compliance, according to El Financiero.
Velasco said both officials discussed cooperation principles based on mutual respect and continuity of bilateral dialogue. He also announced that on Friday, June 12, authorities from both countries will meet in Mexico City on security issues, with U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson present, according to Milenio.
Bilateral momentum is expected to intensify over the next 45 days, the timeline the USTR established for consultations before implementing any tariff measures. The USMCA review will shape the future of trinational trade integration.
