Record Award for Mexico's Energy Transition
On June 5, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the Secretary of Energy (SENER) announced that the Mixed Development Program awarded approximately 8,000 megawatts of renewable energy and storage projects, exceeding the original 6,500 MW target for incorporation before 2029.
Polaris Among Winning Companies
Polaris Renewable Energy was selected with three solar projects totaling about 250 MW of combined capacity and more than 180 MWh of battery storage systems, according to Infobea reporting. The competitive bidding process launched with a request for proposals in February and includes 25-year power purchase agreements with CFE.
Largest Renewables Effort in Mexican History
The program marks the biggest renewable energy and storage procurement initiative in Mexican electricity sector history. SENER's goal, cited in previous Global Energy coverage, is to raise renewable energy's share of national electricity generation from the current 24 percent to 38 percent. Final agreements with each awarded company will close by late July.
Geographic Distribution and Next Steps
The selection includes solar, wind generation, and storage system projects distributed across strategic energy regions throughout the country. CFE maintains its role as sole buyer under the program structure. The next phase involves signing financing agreements and beginning construction on selected projects, scheduled between 2026 and 2028.
