Progress on Flagship Housing Initiative
Mexico's Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) announced 274,000 housing units under construction as of June 15, according to its Vivienda para el Bienestar (Housing for Wellbeing) program. The figure represents 33.6% of the six-year target of 1.8 million homes set at the start of the administration.
Sedatu head Edna Vega Rangel presented the report during the morning briefing at National Palace, as covered by El Universal. The program provides 60-square-meter homes for low-income families through multiple channels operated by Conavi, Infonavit, and Fovissste.
Broader Impact
The 274,000 units under construction join another 604,000 contracted homes, reaching an estimated impact of 2.1 million people, according to El Mañana. The program operates under a housing law reform approved March 10, 2026, granting Infonavit and Fovissste the authority to construct, produce, and acquire land, while strengthening Conavi's coordinating role.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated during the briefing that the program serves nearly 7 million people across multiple modalities, including home improvements, assisted self-building, and new construction. Sedatu prioritized the first 100,000 units in states with the greatest housing deficits, such as Oaxaca, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Veracruz.
Next Benchmark
The next official progress report is scheduled for the third quarter. That measurement will allow authorities to compare construction pace against projections, adjust the 2027 budget allocation, and review targeting criteria by state.
