Prices Hold Firm Across the Board
Regular gasoline (Magna) in Mexico averaged 23.75 pesos per liter on Friday, May 29, with no change from Thursday's close, according to data published by the National Energy Commission (CNE) and reported by specialized media outlets.
Premium gasoline climbed marginally to 28.47 pesos per liter, up one cent, while diesel fell slightly to 27.26 pesos, down one cent from the previous day.
Tax Subsidy Anchors Consumer Prices
Price stability at the pump reflects a substantial federal tax subsidy on the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS). Regular gasoline received a discount of 51.26 percent, worth 3.43 pesos per liter, while premium fuel enjoyed a 43.55 percent break, equivalent to 2.46 pesos per liter.
This subsidy mechanism has become a cornerstone of federal policy to protect household purchasing power against swings in international crude. Mexico's Treasury (SHCP) reviews the incentives weekly to maintain affordable prices while safeguarding public finances.
Relief from International Markets
Recent moderation in WTI and Brent crude has eased pressure on importers and allows Pemex Industrial Transformation to maintain retail prices without significant losses. For the trucking sector, which operates over one million cargo units, stable diesel costs are essential to hold transport rates steady on domestic routes and shipments to the United States, Mexico's primary export destination.
Outlook: Stability Expected
Analysts anticipate prices will remain stable as long as international benchmarks avoid jumps exceeding 10 percent.
