Mexico City Launches Mobility Plan for World Cup 2026

Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada unveiled an integrated mobility and security plan for the capital ahead of Copa Mundial 2026 matches, simultaneously inaugurating Casa Ciudad de México, the tournament's media headquarters. The initiative, called "Jugada de la Movilidad," launched during the June 11 opening ceremony and will operate throughout all matches held in the capital.

The program aims to slash private vehicle use and boost public transit and active mobility options, according to an official statement from the Mexico City Government. For matches at Estadio Ciudad de México, the light rail line "El Ajolote" suspends regular service hours before kickoff to focus exclusively on shuttling fans. The plan also includes expanded Metro and Metrobús routes, park-and-ride facilities, and bike and scooter sharing systems. Each stadium event draws roughly 82,000 people, a volume that strains the city's transit network and requires coordination across multiple agencies. The plan includes staggered school closures at public and private institutions during match days, a measure agreed upon with the capital's education ministry.

Security Operations Run Without Major Incidents

The security operation for the opening match deployed 11,219 personnel at the stadium and the Fan Festival at Mexico City's historic Zócalo, according to Acento Noticias. After Mexico's victory over South Africa in the first match, Brugada told the press that mobility and security operations proceeded without significant incidents. Casa CDMX, located at Campo Marte Casino, will serve national and international journalists with support services, broadcasting infrastructure, and dedicated work areas. The capital's government also reported deploying additional cameras along the stadium corridor and bolstering the C5 coordination center with extra personnel.

Matches Continue Through Late June

Upcoming group-stage matches at Estadio Ciudad de México will activate the plan in line with FIFA's schedule through the end of June.
